Abstract

Polytechnic has approach a proactive steps in applying workplace-based learning (WBL) which is an innovative approach in providing opportunities for students to engage directly in real-life situations. The Industrialized Building System Incubator (IBS) in Politeknik Melaka is based on the triple helix concept which involvement of government through grants, the industry, through technology sharing and Politeknik Melaka as a provider in infrastructure facilities. It measures to reduce the gap between the required differences in the work world, encouraging entrepreneurship, thereby increasing the level of marketability of graduates in polytechnics. This study is one of the solutions that can be applied in higher education to answer the questions on how to improve the students' knowledge and skills towards providing human resource needs in the field of construction especially IBS. This study is a survey of quantitative survey involving 93 respondents using questionnaire and using SPSS for descriptive analysis purposes to see the improvement of knowledge and skills of polytechnic students as a result of WBL and triple helix learning. The results showed that all the measured items show the mean values exceeding 4.5 with high score interpretation. Pearson correlation analysis shows that there is an intermediate positive relationship between knowledge and skills improvement (Pearson;  = 0.761,  <0.01). It shows that increased knowledge can improve the skills. It is hoped that the management of Polytechnic Education Department will continue to encourage TVET in the country.
