Abstract

Homestay program is a form of community-based tourism that is becoming increasingly popular in most developing countries, including Malaysia. This program has the potential to be a catalyst for the socio-economic development of communities in rural areas. However, in enjoying the benefits of this program, participants often face challenges in running a homestay program. The objective of this study is to analyze the motivation of homestay participants as well as their involvement to make the homestay program a success in Selangor. A qualitative approach through the need for a case study has been applied in this study, where the method of partial interview with fifteen (15) representatives of homestay program participants throughout the state of Selangor has been implemented. Thematic analysis was used to process the data using Atlas ti software 8. The results showed that there are seven (7) main motivations of study participants in undergoing homestay program namely (1) willingness to change (2) active involvement of local community (3) attractions tourism around (4) homestay leadership committee support (5) government assistance (6) family heritage legacy and (7) social media. In conclusion, such a study is important to ensure the sustainability of the homestay program as well as to strengthen the rural community. Therefore, a homestay development plan needs to be created to increase community-based tourism in Selangor which focuses on the Community Based Tourism.
